The Emperor and the Fox

Slow start this morning - it's raining again. We make breakfast and dress for the rain. We plan to hike to a good viewing position near the Franz Josef glacier. It's jarring to see the fern forests disappear suddenly into wide river bed covered with glacial melt and grey and white rocks. We made our way up the river until we can see the entire length of the glacier. Despite the heavy rain, we are able to get a good view.
We then drive to the Fox glacier about a half hour away. This is a better hike since you can actually get very close to the terminus of the glacier. The steep cliffs surrounding the river bed have huge, raging waterfalls coming down. We stop to take photos of the aquamarine pools of glacial melt, very stunning even with the grey skies and rain.
